Mandarins and oranges are known for their vitamin C (27 mg per 100 g). Vitamin C is very important for smokers in particular; they need up to twice the amount of this vitamin to protect themselves against lung cancer.

For women of childbearing age, mandarins are a good source of folic acid, which drastically reduces the risk of deformities.

The tangerine also contains over 150 different phytochemicals, over 60 of which are flavonoids.

These protect the blood vessels, have anti-inflammatory effects and are also strong antioxidants. The polyphenols contained are also antioxidant and protect against cancer and heart disease.

Current studies are investigating the role of polyphenols in terms of memory performance and other brain functions.

Another group of phytochemicals, namely the flavanones, especially hesperidin, can reduce inflammation and lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

Hesperidin is in the white layer on the inside of the mandarin peel, so it is recommended that you eat it if possible.

Mandarins for burning fat

A laboratory study by Murray Huff and his team at the University of Western Ontario showed that nobiletin (a flavonoid found in mandarin orange)  inhibits the accumulation of fat in the liver.

And on the other hand, it stimulates the burning of excess fat.

The same research team discovered a flavonoid called naringenin in grapefruit, which provides similar protection against obesity and other metabolic syndromes.

According to Huff, what is particularly interesting is that nobiletin is ten times more effective than naringenin and also has the ability to protect against atherosclerosis.
