The oven chicken offers you the opportunity to serve your guests something very special, but that doesn’t mean much work for you when the guests are there. It almost cooks itself while you have time to take care of your guests.

Baked chicken with oranges: delicious in winter or summer

This recipe for baked chicken is suitable for all seasons. The orange makes it as refreshing in summer as it is reminiscent of Christmas with its scent in winter. The baked chicken can be prepared well the day before or a few hours beforehand and then stored in the refrigerator until it is ready for use.

As soon as your guests arrive, you shine the baked chicken in the preheated oven. While you greet each other and drink the first aperitif or eat the starter, the baked chicken cooks by itself and is soon ready without any further action on your part! Try how delicious it is!

Please note…

The risk of salmonella infection is greater with chicken than with other types of meat. Therefore, you should pay attention to hygiene during preparation. First wash the meat thoroughly in cold water and then dry it with disposable kitchen towels, which you dispose of immediately and do not have to be left on the worktop.

Then cut the meat on a board and with a knife that you only use for this purpose and put away immediately after use, so that you are not tempted to cut other things in the first place.

After touching the raw meat, wash your hands before touching any other food. Rinse all items that have come into contact with the chicken with at least 60 ° C water and dish soap.

When cooking, make sure that the meat is cooked everywhere. The “pink” popular with lamb and beef dishes is not appropriate for chicken and can pose a health risk. The meat should also be at least 70 ° C inside to be safe!

Recipe: Baked Chicken with Orange

This recipe is not a diet recipe, so please leave the skin on the chicken. This becomes crispy after cooking in the oven and the leaking fat collects at the bottom of the oven tray. So as long as you don’t spoon the sauce, the recipe is still relatively low in fat. For four eaters you need:

  • 4 chicken drumsticks
  • 500ml orange juice
  • 2 large onions
  • 50ml olive oil
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic
  • Pepper salt
  • A bunch of fresh rosemary sprigs
  • 4 oranges (please absolutely from controlled organic cultivation!)

Make sure that the orange juice is pure juice and not nectar, which is nothing more than sugar water and has no place in the recipe.

Grease an ovenproof dish with olive oil and mix the 50ml olive oil with salt and pepper. Brush the prepared chicken drumsticks with oil and place them in the oven dish. Mix the remaining oil with the orange juice to form an emulsion.

Cut the oranges into pieces or slices. It is important that you also use the peel, so the oranges must be organically grown to ensure that no toxic residues from the peel get into your delicious baked chicken!

Chop the onions into large pieces and cut the garlic cloves into slices or cubes. Arrange the onions, orange pieces and garlic around the chicken drumsticks and place the fresh rosemary sprigs on top and in between. Finally, pour the orange juice and olive oil marinade over everything and put the chicken in the oven.

At 220 ° C, your baked chicken takes about 30-40 minutes until the skin is crispy and the meat is cooked through. Serve with fresh white bread or ciabatta.

Not only oranges, please “organic” …

Have you ever asked yourself where the meat comes from and how healthy is it? When you buy from the butcher, you can’t rely on the butcher to know where his chicken comes from. He often gets it from the wholesale market or slaughterhouse and knows little about its keeping and origin. In the supermarket you will only find a label that provides information about the country of origin, nothing more.

Basically, however, you should make sure, especially with chicken meat, that the meat comes from animals that have been raised under controlled organic rearing. Especially in chicken farming, the massive use of antibiotics is a problem due to factory farming – ultimately also for you, because the resulting antibiotic resistance can mean that the antibiotic no longer works for you in an emergency.
