5 ideas for reusing plastic bottles

Unfortunately, the use of plastic bottles or PET is a major burden on our environment. They can be recycled, but many of them end up in rivers and seas, making them a damaging element for nature.

As consumers, we can use fun, original and practical ideas to reuse plastic bottles. A great opportunity to organize a handicraft lesson with our children. Curious? Just read on.

5 fun ideas to recycle plastic bottles

1. Bird manger made from plastic bottles

plastic bottle

A very simple way to give empty plastic bottles a new life and thus protect the environment. A bottle filled with birdseed next to the window or in the garden gives our home new and fresh life, as more than one bird will fly to it.

How is the crib made? As can be seen in the picture, the handicraft work is not very difficult.

The size of the plastic bottle is not important. Two holes are cut on the upper and lower side so that two spoons can be inserted .

The bottle should always be filled with grains and seeds so that the birds always fly to it. A string is attached to the top of the bottle so that the bottle can be hung.

2. Can with zipper

Recycle plastic bottles

A fun, easy, and very practical cycling idea. The box can be used for buttons or other small utensils. Use only the bottom of the bottles for this. When this is colored, the cans are even more interesting.

Two identical bottle bottoms are used for the can so that they fit together properly when closing. Sewing the zippers on can be a little trickier.

It is best to use a large needle. The zipper can also be attached to the bottle with an adhesive. This handicraft suggestion is especially fun for the children, as it allows them to store their little toy parts.

3. Plant pot

A really very practical idea and without a doubt a good reason to finally create a mini garden or even an herb garden at home. Dandelion, peppermint and parsley are just a few examples.

The earth just needs the necessary nutrients, substrate and of course water and we have our own herbs. It is best to use wide bottles for this. Cut this open at the bottom.

However, if you cut the bottle a little higher, it can also serve as a small greenhouse, which is very useful with tomatoes as they need a lot of heat.

However, the tomatoes should then be transplanted into a larger pot, because they need space to grow. If you use colored bottles, the garden will look much more colorful and lively.

4. Household tools

Tool

This craft idea can be very useful around the house. Depending on the bottle, it can be used as a dustpan or a shovel for other purposes (e.g. for the sandpit). Great idea, isn’t it? When using it as a shovel, it is important that the bottle has a handle.

One should use a bottle similar to the one shown. In order not to make a mistake when cutting, first draw the cutting mark with a pen, so you can assess the shape of the shovel beforehand.

Don’t forget: the handle should be included when marking the bottle.

5. Clothespin basket

Plastic bottle basket

These handicraft instructions are not only suitable for our clothespins. The basket can also be used for children’s toys or other purposes.

It is best to use a 5 liter bottle for this container, as it is slightly larger. Cut the bottle roughly in the middle as needed. It should at least be high enough to accommodate the items you want.

Cover the sharp edges with a nice tape or fabric so that you cannot injure yourself.

Now cut four holes in  order to attach two cords as handles. Our basket is ready.

These are just a few examples of how to reuse the plastic bottles that are so often used because it is actually a shame to just throw them away.

Every day, many plastic containers are thrown in the trash, so at least some of them can be recycled. The unusable bottles can still be taken to the plastic waste.

If we let our creativity run free, we will certainly come up with further ideas for reusing everyday objects that normally end up in the trash.  Children in particular will have a lot of fun doing these handicrafts!
